Thoughts On Recording Gear
A quick note on music gear in general. Don't get obsessed with premium gear. Putting together a project or professional studio is a ridiculously expensive undertaking without a good amount of DIY and self education. Don't fall for the retail sales hype on the newest microphones, preamps, cords, converters, mixers, soundproofing, monitors, controllers and the like. Most audio hardware has an extremely long life cycle and in general, good older units tend to be of a higher quality build then the newer "prosumer" level gear. Do not discount eBay purchasing or DIY construction because of a few horror stories. Most all of my gear has been purchased used or built myself for a fraction of its full retail price.
Websites like gearslutz.com can be a good reference for locating high quality / good value used gear, but you will have to filter through plenty of thinly veiled advertisements and high end gear snobbery. There is definitely as much bad information on the web as good info, so be careful. It is always best to hear gear yourself before a big investment. Remember that your entire signal chain and environment plays into the overall quality so don't expect one piece of gear to change the world. From time to time I may end up giving my opinion on gear or companies here... These are simply opinions based on my own experiences. I am not paid to endorse any of these products, nor do I intend to offend any of the proprietors of products that I was less than impressived with.
